The Ovindoli-Pezza source is included in the Database as a 27 km-long, N151-
striking, 60W-dipping large fault that, according to Pantosti et al. (1996), is
characterised by prevalent normal slip.

The southern boundary of the source is well constrained and roughly coincides
with the northern boundary of the adjacent Fucino basin source, whereas the
location of the northern termination is still debated but should coincide with
the northern end of the Mt. Ocre ridge. The source model included in the
Database assumes that also the Cefalone and Ocre fault sections are part of the
same source, in addition to the Ovindoli-Pezza section. This assumption changes
substantially the seismic potential of the Ovindoli-Pezza source from a roughly
20 km-long to a nearly 30 km-long source. Recent paleoseismological
evidence for possible synchronous slip events has been recently found for the
Ocre and Ovindoli-Pezza sections.

Some controversy exists about the kinematics of this fault. Giraudi (1988) and
two recently published papers by Galadini (1999) and Piccardi et al. (1999)
predict important left-lateral displacement for the Ovindoli-Pezza Fault.
Conversely, prevalent normal faulting movement is supported by the detailed
geomorphologic and microtopographic analysis of the Ovindoli-Pezza Fault carried
out by D'Addezio et al. (1996), and by the consistency with the Fucino basin
source located just south of it.

OPEN QUESTIONS

1) What are the relationships between the Ovindoli-Pezza and Fucino basin
seismogenic sources? Are they distinct seismogenic sources always generating
earthquakes separately?

2) What is the northern boundary of the Ovindoli-Pezza source? Are the Cefalone
and Ocre fault sections part of the same "characteristic" seismogenic source,
that is, do they always slip in conjunction with the Ovindoli-Pezza section?

3) Is the Ovindoli-Pezza fault a prevalently normal fault or does it have a
substantial lateral component?

4) Could the Ovindoli-Pezza source be the causative fault of the 1315 earthquake
in central Abruzzo?
