COMMENTS

The Gubbio Middle Source is the middle section of an active major tectonic structure
known as the Gubbio Fault. The identification and description of this source are almost
entirely based on knowledge available concerning the Gubbio South Source, which was
the locus of the 29 April 1984 earthquake. The reader is encouraged to refer to the
Comments and Open Questions text written for the Gubbio South Source for
generalities about these adjacent sources and for a general discussion on the geology
and tectonics of the region.

OPEN QUESTIONS

1) Is the Gubbio Middle Source truly a separate entity from the Gubbio South Source, as
suggested by the limited rupture length associated with the 1984 earthquake and by
stratigraphic and structural evidence?

2) Should this source be interpreted as antithetic to the Altotiberina Fault, which
should mark its bottom level?

3) What is the true depth of this source? Does the fault extend down-dip enough to
have the potential for a moderate-size earthquake?
