COMMENTS

So far no convincing and unambiguous elements exist on the location of the source of
the 1905 earthquake. For this reason we adopted the intensity-based solution, which
is of poor quality due to the uneven distribution of intensity data points and to the
strong scatter that exists among them.

OPEN QUESTIONS

1) Is the epicentre of the 1905 earthquake located off-shore, as suggested by some
seismological studies (Rizzo 1907; Riuscetti and Schick 1974; Martini and Scarpa 1983;
Mulargia et al. 1984; Westaway, 1992), or in-land, as suggested by the most recent
earthquake catalogues (CFTI, Boschi et al. 1997; CPTI, CPTI Working Group 1999)?

2) What is the fault responsible for the 1905 earthquake? Three possible solutions are
given by Valensise et al. (1993), Mulargia et al. (1984) and Westaway (1993) (the latter
coincides with the fault described by Ciaranfi et al. 1983). Perhaps the true source is
offshore and does not match any of these hypotheses.

3) Are the NNE-SSW fault located near Pizzo and reported by Ciaranfi et al. (1983) and
Westaway (1993) and the "Vena Fault" (Dumas et al. 1987) the same fault? If this is
the case, has this fault been active in Late Pleistocene (Ciaranfi et al. 1983; Westaway
1993), or conversely is inactive (Dumas et al. 1987)?
